Minnesota Urology is committed to providing the highest quality urologic care, and this includes being able to provide “cutting edge” therapies and treatments for its patients by conducting clinical trials. While most private urology practices do not conduct research, Minnesota Urology has a large core group of physicians that actively engage in clinical research and are fully supported by full-time, experienced research staff who are certified in clinical research.

Minnesota Urology conducts a variety of different types of clinical studies, including observational patient registries/ observational studies as well as randomized, interventional clinical trials. Clinical trials are designed to study the safety and effectiveness of new products or interventions (e.g., drugs, biologics, devices, surgical techniques) in different phases.

About Clinical Research. At Minnesota Urology, we conduct a variety of different types of clinical studies, from observational studies to large, randomized, controlled interventional clinical trials. We conduct Phase II and Phase III clinical trials that are especially important for getting new treatment options approved for clinical care. Phase II trials are initial studies that are conducted to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a new treatment, therapy or technique with patients that the intervention is intended to treat. Phase III trials are conducted with a much larger group of patients across many more clinical sites to further study its safety and effectiveness. A Phase III clinical trial is often referred to as a “pivotal trial” when the intended purpose of the clinical trial is to obtain FDA approval so that it can be marketed and sold within the U.S. Phase IV clinical studies are additional studies that are conducted once the new product is approved to be on the market. Post-market studies may be required by the FDA or companies may just decide to do them to get different kinds data that is also helpful for marketing or reimbursement purposes. In addition to clinical trials, Minnesota Urology also conducts biomarker and genomic studies to validate tests that may improve the ability to detect cancer earlier, help predict the aggressiveness of the cancer or response to treatment in individual patients.
