Biography

Dr. Sovell has been an innovator and leader within Urology and health care over the past decade. He was Chief of Staff at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, ranked the top metro Hospital by US News and World Report. He also serves on the Board of Directors at Minnesota Urology and on the Abbott Northwestern Hospital Foundation Board. To broaden his knowledge, Dr Sovell completed the Physician Leadership College at the University of St Thomas.

Clinically, Dr Sovell trained at the George Washington University in Washington DC. During this time, the minimally invasive surgical technique of laparoscopy was being adopted by the field of Urology. Dr. Sovell took a lead in this field with a special emphasis on laparoscopic nephrectomy (kidney removal) and partial nephrectomy. Since then, Dr. Sovell has locally pioneered the technique of robotic retroperitoneal partial nephrectomy and has has the largest experience in the State. This technique has many advantages for patients including: faster recovery with less pain, shorter hospital stay, and less blood loss. His outcomes consistently beat national benchmarks.

Dr. Sovell evaluates and treats a broad range of conditions with an emphasis on kidney and prostate cancer.
