Biography

Dr. Matthew O’Shaughnessy is a native of Minnesota who returned home to the Twin Cities and Urology Associates/Minnesota Urology after practicing at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Memorial Sloan Kettering is known world-wide as one of the foremost hospitals for urologic cancers.

Dr. O’Shaughnessy graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School and completed his residency there as well. He then moved to New York City for a urologic oncology fellowship and was subsequently recruited to join the faculty at Memorial Sloan Kettering where in addition to a busy surgical practice he developed a clinical trial for high risk prostate cancer, and studied the role of immune therapy in urologic cancers.

Dr. O’Shaughnessy has published a number of papers on urologic cancer and has been asked to speak as an expert on urologic cancer at many national conferences.

His medical interests include management of all types of urologic cancers including prostate, bladder, kidney and testis. He likes the complex nature of urologic oncology and he enjoys working together with his patients to develop a treatment plan that is best for their needs. This could include active surveillance for low risk cancers or surgery in some cases.

He is skilled in use of the most current tools available to manage urologic cancers including MRI-guided Fusion Biopsy, use of genomic tests to help guide decision-making, and nerve-sparing robotic surgery. He is also experienced with traditional open surgery when this is the best option for the patient.

Dr. O’Shaughnessy will be spending most of his time at Abbott Northwestern Hospital, but has privileges at hospitals all over the Twin Cities including Fairview Southdale Hospital and Buffalo Hospital. He will be seeing patients at a variety of clinic locations including Minneapolis, Edina, Plymouth, and Buffalo.
